Liz West Hundreds and Thousands

Past Now Then featured artist reveals stunning installation, wrapping the glass balustrades of the Greenwich Peninsula with a ribbon of undulating colour.

We had the pleasure of featuring a selection of Liz West’s beautiful installations when we launched the new Now Then website last summer, so we were naturally thrilled to hear about the arrival of a new work. Our only wish is that it was up here in Sheff!

The piece, titled 'Hundreds and Thousands', was commissioned by Greenwich Peninsula for The Tide, and contemplates the subtle nuances of light in the riverside location and the transition from spring to summer.

From Liz’s perspective, 'Hundreds and Thousands' pays homage to The Tide’s geography and proximity to the Greenwich meridian line by behaving as a sundial, allowing people to see the changing light depending on the time of day and season. The multiple reflective glass surfaces adorned with jewel-like colours reflect both people and surroundings, encouraging and promoting movement around The Tide and making a work that feels like it ‘belongs’.

“The experience of seeing my work as you move along and around The Tide gives visitors and pedestrians a kaleidoscopic and rich visual experience that will hopefully trigger feelings of wellbeing and joy.”

The site-specific work aims to create a new space for exploration and discovery, depicting and symbolising a physical and metaphorical meeting point of both colours and people. Covering all the glass panels of The Tide, the immersive installation helps join together the different paths across the space.

“We are delighted to have such a joyous piece as part of our series of colourful commissions for The Tide and we hope people will feel uplifted by the bold and bright experience,” Kaia Charles, Cultural Curator at Greenwich Peninsula, added.

If you happen to be in the Greenwich area, we recommend popping to the Peninsula for a visit. For more information about 'Hundreds and Thousands' and Liz’s other work, head to her website.
